9. Connecting lower cases

When you look at the copperplate / English round-hand script, it looks like they are all connected and we may think that calligrapher wrote this continuously, without any pen lift. Let’s see how we can achieve this look.

The movement we learnt first was letter shape i and friends (name this movement 1). When you connect these letters together is simple.

You might not need any pen lift at this stage at all.

All the same for the ‘movement 1‘ next to each other. You can apply dot and cross bar later.  ( careful that s has different slant)

When letters with this movement (movement 2) , spacing is a bit wider than 1+1.

Each strokes are coloured so you can see where the pen lifts are.

This connecting way covers most of the cases. Practice well to achieve equal smooth look.

Same way to connect with letters with ascenders and descenders.

Self assess points – slants, spacing, o shape, letter width, smoothness etc.

This is not-so-good example. Avoid lines without any thick – thin contrast, too.

Carry on practice!

Patience and quantity, we need!
